One of my front tires has been losing air pretty quick since I finshed a large bush hogging job. It drops from 35psi to 10psi in two weeks or so. I looked the tire over and there are numerous small thorns stuck in the R-4 tire's rubber. Should I take the tire off and run water over it to look for bubbles and then have it patched if I find the whole, or should I just squirt some sealant into it? If so, what kind? I was thinking of some of that green ATV tire sealant Cabela's sells.thanks, big ed

Eddie,
A tire with a lot of thorns can sometimes present a long term problem. I worked in a rural tire repair shop for 7 years and have seen about any type of problem you can imagine can happen to a tire. I've never really had any faith in tire sealers, even if it does manage to stop the leak for now, without removal of the offending object (thorn, nail, etc.) the tire will eventually leak again. Here's some of the ways we used to fix a thorn problem:
1) Dig all the thorns out of the tread with an ice pick or other sharp object without puncturing the tire. Then find and patch any leaks.
2) Put a tube in the tire (assuming it's a tubeless to begin with) and make a liner to go between the tube and the tire out of a heavy piece of rubber (another tube or a truck tire liner).
3) If there are numerous thorns, some people will just replace the tire to avoid additional fixes later as the thorns continue to work their way into the tire.
We were usually successful with either option 1 or 2 depending on the severity of the thorn infestation.
Mark ....

Thanks Mark, I will give option 1 a shot. It's a small front tire (maybe a 14" rim?) so I would think any tire shop could handle dismounting it for me. There were several huge thorn bushes that I drove over when bush hogging. They're gone now! So hopefully I don't have to worry about thorns again. Thanks for the tips,

I get hawthornes in my tires all the time bush hogging. The only way to prevent is to back the hog over those bastiges when you see em. And the only way to cure is to take the tire off and run your fingers slowly on the inside finding all the thorn tips. Even if you 'slime' the tires, residual thorn tips will overwhelm the slime and leak.
Other things you can do is sport the cash for heavier ply tires if available. thorns can get thru 4 ply, but 6 ply seems to stop them. I got a set of 10ply on the front of my massey-ferg that seem to be impervious. And use ag tubes, not car tubes.
If the tire can run tubeless, you can do that with a patch kit in your parts box, until the tire gets too holy, then time for a tube.
Because of the reality of this, I consider a field with hawthorns to not be a 'clean field' and I charge more per pto hour appropriately. ....
